The Liebig`s
Company began in Fray Bentos in 1865, thanks to the visionary
german engineer Georg Giebert, who designed a thriving bussiness
by making good use of products and by-products of the cattle in
the area. Liebig´s meat extract introduced the name of FRAY
BENTOS to the world, and, in the imagination of the genial Jules
Verne, it served breakfast to their firs travellers to the moon.
A giant emporium was installed in Fray Bentos, using state of
the art technology. It was here, for example, that the first
lights were lit in Uruguay, some three years before Montevideo
had electricity.
The
"Casa Grande" or "Manager`s House", with a
botanical garden in the rear, was buit in 1868. It is one of the
main attractios of the Barrio Anglo (english district).
In places
where history is recogniced, respected and taught, all can
benefit and enjoy it. Fray Bentos is one of this places. In the
middle of the 20th century, an important chapter in the history
of the development of the areas rich farmland and grazing began
here. The german Liebig`s Extract of Meat Company and later the
famous british Anglo Company, established and developed this
industry as one of the most important in the world. Today, 130
years later, these machines constructed specifically to
manufacture meat extract, photographs, documents, blueprints,
offices and numerous buildings await your visit to introduce you
to a magic world, as if you have returned to another century
when the industrial revolution was born on the Río de la
Plata... |
